The U14 footballers continued their championship campaign on Monday evening in Milltown, with Fifteen minutes to go before throw in proceedings were in doubt as thunder, lightning and torrential rain battered Warrenpoint.

However the storm passed leaving a sodden but playable pitch.

The ‘point lads knew that they had under-performed the previous week, losing away to Clonduff, and they were well motivated to make amends, knowing that this match provided one last chance to progress to a championship semi-final.

This was evident in how the young blues came out of the blocks, scoring a goal and five points without reply, the goal coming from James Russell.

Ballyholland, who had caused us big problems in the league, found the net with their first score, but only managed two more points in the first half.

Warrenpoint notched up another 1.06 in the first half, the second goal coming from Jamie Powell.

This left the half time score at 2.11 to 1.02.

The second half started well for Warrenpoint with a brace of goals for Robert Barnett in the opening five minutes.

However, it wasn’t to be all one way traffic and a determined Ballyholland side dug in and points were traded, two at a time, between the sides for the next Fifteen minutes. Making the score, with 10 minutes to go, 4.16 to 1.07.

An improving Ballyhollands next two scores were goals, leaving them 12 points behind with 10 minutes to go, but fortunately the young blues steadied it up at the back and managed 3 more points in the dying minutes to Ballyhollands 1 point.

The final score was 4.19 to 3.08 and John Dalys young charges now progress to a championship semi-final against Burren, scheduled for Monday evening (28/08) in Burren.

As a footnote it should be said that this U14 group have now gone a full season, league and championship, unbeaten at home. Quite an achievement!
