St. Peter’s GAA Club, Warrenpoint held its Annual Reunion at the Whistledown Hotel on Friday 24 February 2012.  Club Chairman Feargal McCormack reflected on a very eventful year of activities for St. Peter’s GAA Club, Warrenpoint.  He stated that the club was delivering much, in terms of servicing its local community for “whole of family, for whole of life”.  He estimated that the club had contributed 84,676 volunteer hours to the local community in the past twelve months, which in terms of social capital value, assuming £7 per hour, would equate to £592,732.  He noted that the club was currently experiencing record participation in underage gaelic football and hurling and was very active in camogie, the launch of a new ladies U-12 Gaelic Football team along with the promotion of Irish language, dancing and music, together with community outreach and health and wellbeing activities.

Feargal concluded by saying “Looking to the future, Cumann Pheadair Naofa will continue through its ongoing journey of continuous improvement, to be a progressive and outward looking organisation, dynamically engaged with its many constituents, and driven by a vision and a passion, not just for itself and its members, but for the community it serves.”

A souvenir programme for the event was edited and produced by Ronan McMahon which illustrated in words and photographs the breadth of activities organised by Cumann Pheadair Naofa over the past 12 months.

The Guest Speaker at the event was Aogan ÓFearghail, President of the Ulster GAA Council.  In a wide ranging and inspiring address, Aogan congratulated Cumann Pheadair Naofa on their magnificent success in being awarded the Club Maith Platinum Award for the GAA Club Excellence and also the Irish News Large GAA Club of the Year Award.  Aogan congratulated Cumann Pheadair Naofa for operating at the heart of its local community providing a wide range of activities.

Gerry Gray was a very popular recipient of the Chairman’s Special Award for  outstanding contribution to the Club.  Master of Ceremonies at the event, Ronan McMahon, was presented with a special leadership award for his work as Club Games Development and Coaching Officer.  Club footballer, Ciaran McCartan was also acknowledged with a presentation for being selected at centre-half back on the Ulster GAA Colleges team, in recognition of performances for Abbey C.B.S.

Scór Sinsear Down County Final

posted 23 Feb 2012 04:56 by Aisling McGivern

This coming Sunday, 26 February two newly formed St Peter's dancing teams will take to the stage in The Abbey School Newry to compete in the Down County Scór Sinsear Final Ceili and Set Competitions after having been crowned South Down Ceili Champions and Set Runners up.

The ceili team of Claire McGivern, Aoife Burns, Laura McGrath, Caoimhe Curran, Hannah Kearney, Aoife Quinn, Shannen Browne, Laura Robertson and Saoirse Pearce have been spending every free minute polishing off lines, steps and lead rounds! The girls have put in a tremendous amount of work and have been ably guided by mentors Carmel McGrath and Catherine McAnulty.

The newly formed set team which comprises of life long set dancers Carmel McGrath, Joanne Doyle, Aislíng McGivern, Elaine Kelly and Francie McGivern along with new recruits Chris McCann, Gerard McArdle and Brendan Rice have been tapping out their steps into the early hours of the morning most nights and have put in hours and hours of intense practice in order to compete to the highest level on Sunday Night. Mentor Catherine McAnulty has transformed this team and is very proud of their efforts and commitment to Scór 2012. The dancers had a masterclass on Wednesday night where mentor Catherine invited All Ireland winning set dancers to Cumann Pheadair Naofa clubrooms to speak to the CPN dancers and pass on their words of wisdom and tips for success. CPN dancers were privileged to get the chance of pair off with another dancer and learn from the best!

Special thanks must go to dancer mentor Catherine who has put in hours of work in order to prepare both teams for the County Final on Sunday. We have no doubt all CPN competitors will do the club proud, it is already an achievement to have two club teams in a County Final, lets hope we have another Ulster to attend! The dancers would also like to take this opportunity to thank the Football Section for giving up their allocated time slots in the hall to allow for extra practices and Hubert Shannon for arranging extra bookings, one club, one badge!

The County Final begins on Sunday at 6pm with the Ceili Competition, and it would be good if club members could come and support the dancers in their quest for the County Titles.

Good luck to all competitors involved. Cumann Pheadair Naofa Abú

U10 Hurlers Travel To Magherafelt

posted 20 Feb 2012 00:47 by Warrenpoint GAA

On Saturday St Peter's U10 hurlers travelled to Magherafelt for the annual Ulster U-10 hurling blitz.  In what was an excellent day’s hurling,  the young hurlers played a variety of clubs whom they had never competed against before. The boys played teams from all over Ulster including Donegal, Armagh, Tyrone, Derry and of course Antrim.

Due to the ongoing success of indoor hurling C.P.N. were able to enter two teams. This ensured that every player enjoyed five high quality games of hurling.

The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the B team putting in massive effort against Belfast's Lamh Dhearg to secure a well earned draw and the A team defeating Derry giants Lavey. Well done to all the players who participated
