Fáilte Romhaibh

Ní dabht ar bith na go raibh Gaeilge bhinn ag titim ar chluasaibh na ndaoine in Éirinn nuair a bhí Íosa Chríost ag caint leis na daoine léannta sa teampaill agus É fós óg. Bhí na Ceiltigh lonnaithe sa tír seo le cúpla céad bliain roimh an am sin agus tús áite faighte acu.

Tá fhois againn fosta go raibh sochaí shofaisticiúil ar an oileán seo leis na mílte bliain roimhe sin agus gan amhras bhí a gcórais  chumarsáide acu. Níl eolas ar bith againn faoi na teangacha sin áfach. Tháinig an Ghaeilge síos chugainn ó ghlún go glún le dhá mhíle bliain go leith agus tá sí fós beo, ní hamháin i mbéalaibh na ndaoine in áiteanna éagsúla ar fud na tire, ach i meon agus i dtuiscint na ndaoine. Thug gach dream ar an oileán seo tacaíocht don Ghaeilge ag amanna faoi leith i rith na staire.

Is í an seod is luachmhaire atá againn mar dhream daoine ar dhromchla an domhain. Dob iad na daoine céanna a thug an Mhanainnis dúinn agus Gaeilge na hAlban. Dúirt Julius Caesar nach raibh cead ag na Ceiltigh rud ar bith a scríobh síos ar phár, toisc gur chomhartha dímheasa ar an eolas é a scríobh ar phár. Sin é an fáth bhféidir go bhfuil an traidisiúin béil chomh láidir is atá sé againn go dtí an lá atá inniu ann.

Más mian leat an oidhreacht sin a bhlaiseadh arís i gceann de na háiteanna is áille ar domhain le dream daoine nach bhfuil a sárú ann --- Bí  Linn i Ros Ghoill ag Cúrsa Chuimhneachán Shéamuis de Faoite.

While Jesus Christ debated with the wise men in the Temple there is no doubt that the sweet sound of the Gaelic tongue was dropping gently on the ears of the inhabitants of this island. It is our most precious jewel.

The language was also the vehicle that transported literature, poetry, art and lore and practically all other aspects of our unique inheritance. The language of the “Q” Celts is common to the island of Ireland, The Isle of Man and Scotland. This language was enriched by the languages already prevalent in a sophisticated society on these islands prior to the arrival of the Celts, and subsequently by successive waves of immigrants.

Our linguistic heritage was mounded by the psyche , experience and character of a diverse people with a potent penchant for artistic excellence. It’s  idiom and articulation  predates most other languages in Western Europe.

The monks of Ireland’s “Golden Age” raised the island to the status of University of Europe. Travelling scholars recount the ability of Irish peasants to speak in Latin and Greek. Robin Flower said the Blasket islanders spoke in poetry and George Thompson compared the words of an old woman taking water from the well who had neither  education or learning, to that of the Classical Greek Poets.

You too can return to the well and take part of this unique experience in the  beautiful surroundings of the Ros Goill peninsula and in excellent company. Whether fluent or with just the ‘cúpla focal’ you will walk again in the footsteps of the great, and experience the best currently available in language, literature, dance, song and lore. Come again to the spring where the beauties of inheritance continue renew and embellish themselves  like the pristine waters of a spring well.

The Ulster Council of the Gaelic Athletic Association sponsors this course.  The course takes place on the beautiful Ros Goill Peninsula in Donegal, and Comhairle Uladh provides a wide variety of facilities, and services free of charge to participating members. Do not miss this opportunity to enhance your knowledge and appreciation of our heritage.
The course caters for three categories of participant (a) Fluent Irish speakers.
 (b)  Improvers or those with a little Irish. (c) Beginners or those with little or no knowledge of the language. Every effort is made to ensure that the course is both pleasant and inclusive. This is achieved by having classes for three levels of fluency in the language, by refined preparation for certain events, and by strategic translation and summarisation techniques together with the wholehearted participation of the course members in the delivery of the programme.
There are only three recommendations here for this week (a) Speak as much Irish as possible(b)Divest yourself of any degree of pretentiousness (c) Enjoy.
