Teams: Rostrevor vs Cumann Pheadair Naofa

Venue: Rostrevor

Competition: Championship

Match Summary: The Warrenpoint U16 girls began their championship campaign with a trip away to Rostrevor. A trip along the road to our close neighbours is never an easy affair & this encounter was certainly no different. Playing down the slope initially, the Blues showed good intent from the start as they applied the early pressure. Despite getting away a number of shots, Warrenpoint were unable to convert the pressure to scores. Rostrevor got the first point on the board & relieved the pressure they had been under. It wasn’t until half-way through the first half that the Blues finally troubled the scoreboard, with a point from Anna Craven. This was soon followed by points from Jennah Doyle & Enya Quinn, as Warrenpoint started to find their range. Another point from Enya & a goal from Jennah, ensured that the Blues went into half-time with a 5-point lead.

The visitors started the second half strongly, with a goal from Enya, followed soon after by a goal from Lauren Quinn. Just as it looked as if Warrenpoint might stretch away, Rostrevor reminded them that they were very much in the game, as they pulled back a goal & a point, either side of another point for Anna. Rostrevor upped the pressure, perhaps sensing a way back into the game & managed three scores without reply, including a goal. With the gap down to two scores, either side could still take the match. The defensive lines of the Blues were pushed to limits, throwing everything in front of Rostrevor, Katie Howlett taking a ball to the face, which was bound for the back of the net. A momentary easing of the pressure on the Warrenpoint goal, saw the Blues work the ball up to the other end of the field, the move nicely finished off by Jennah, taking a point with almost the last kick of the game.

A very entertaining & hard-fought match, saw the Blues take the spoils. Very well done to both sets of girls, who gave it their all & put on a great show of ladies’ Gaelic football.

Wednesday night saw a big turn out for the U14s final friendly against Glenn, before the championship. Many of the U12s turned up for their first experience of U14 football, on a very wet night, in St.Mark’s. Twenty-six players turned up & all twenty-six got their turn on the field. A big thank you to the management team for all their work in preparation for the forth coming championship, with our first match against Rostrevor on Sunday 13th September.
