U12 Clonduff v Warrenpoint  Saturday 5th April  (Away)

Due to confirmation in Newry and a  few girls not able to make it, we actually started with a very young team mainly consisting of U10 players.  Warrenpoint started with enthuasism and resulted in an early goal from Amy Freer.  Unfortunately, the strength of Clonduff overpowered our young girls and the ball stayed mainly in the Clonduff forward area but due to the great goal keeping of Meabh O Hare, they didn’t get to score all their shots.  The second half was like a different game, Warrenpoint came out fighting.  Even Silin Murphys bum getting the whistle a few times didn’t let them give up the fight.  This showed when Clonduff only managed to get 1 goal in the second half.   Final Score Clonduff 4-1  Warrenpoint 1-0.

Meabh O Hare:Megan McManus: Orla Johnston: Caoimhe Smyth: Caoimhe Daly: Silin Murphy: Amy Freer:
Megan McGivern: Sinead Rice: Sarah Daly: Geraldine Hughes: Chloe Smyth
Subs: Rachel Johnson, Orla McConville, Emma Murphy

In the subs match, we played all our little girls who gave Clonduff a hard time.  Caoimhe Smyth and Shaneen McGivern fought hard in the midfield and not letting Clonduff get that ball easily.  Kirsty Fegan following in Michaela’s footsteps was everywhere and she was getting that ball and no one was going to get in her way. This game gave our very young girls something to go home and tell their parents they played a brilliant game.  Well done to all of you.

Amy Freer: Meabh O Hare: Chloe Smith: Sarah Daly: Sinead Rice: Aine Flett: Shaneen McGivern: Caoimhe Smyth: Kirsty Fegan: Jodie Smyth: Emma Murphy: Jamie Lee McClelland

Didn’t Orla and Michael make a lovely young couple at the Down County Dinner Dance.  And we cant leave out the other young couple,Belle and Arthur.

U16 Longstone v Warrenpoint Tuesday 8th April (Away)

This match was played on a field where the grass was 6 inches long (even Aileen took home a blade of grass to prove it).  Longstone kept up to their reputation and played hard and got away with their fouling and dangerous swinging which seemed to go unnoticed by the referee.  Warrenpoint girls tried their best in the first half but changed tactics in the second half and this kept longstone at bay.  Unfortunately the tremendous effort of our very young team didn’t pay off and had to come home defeated but with their heads held high.

While playing for Ballyholland minors, Warrenpoint’s Orla McParland came up against a previous Warrenpoint player in a match against An Riocht.  Going for a ball, Orla and Niamh clashed and Orla ended up with 2 fingers in a bandage…. No rivalry there then….

On the same night in casualty, U12’s Megan McGivern fell and hurt her arm and was out for the next match but still tried to do training with her arm in a sling.  Now that’s determination….

U12 Warrenpoint v Attical Saturday 12th April (Home)

It was great to see a lot of girls turning up and the sun turned out also.  This was a very even matched game and both teams tried their best even with some dubious refereeing from Attical. Mid field tried their very best to get that ball up to our forward line and a few times they were very unlucky.  Warrenpoint’s back line got it tough today but they did very well in keeping that ball away from Megan McManus in goals.    Warrenpoint’s half forward Orla Johnson was tired out from playing for St Marks last night but fought  till the end and didn’t give up.  The second goal for Warrenpoint in the dying minutes give back our team the confidence that was beginning to disappear and they came away as the worthy winners.   Final Score Warrenpoint 2-0 Attical 1-0.

Congratulations to all our girls who made their confirmation this month.   Even Michelle scrubed up well on the day!!!!

Get Well Wishes to Caoimhe Byrne who is recovering well from her operation.  Our determined little back is badly missed.  She is so keen to get back to Camogie, we just cant keep her away, But its great to see her looking so well.

Well done to all our girls who have made school teams.  Caoimhe Daly was part of the Sacred Heart team who won the Co Down Under14 camogie shield. Orla Johnson and Michaela Fegan playing for St Marks who done well this year.  The fact that so many of our young camogs have made teams in St Marks, St Louis, Sacred Heart, St Dallans, etc shows how much skill there is around Warrenpoint and it encourages your club team mentors to be more determined to bring out the best in you all.

U14 Ballyholland v Warrenpoint  Tuesday 15th April (Away)

This was a very tough match against an extremely strong Ballyholland team.  Nadine O Rourke started in goals for the first time but not wanting to scare her out of goals for the season, we took her off and put Silin Murphy back in goals.  Silin had a few very good saves and she also had great help from Aoibheann O Hare.  The back line really fought hard in this game and Ballyholland’s best player didn’t get the better of Katie Grant.  This was a very low scoring game for the U14’s first match but well done anyway.

Congratulations to our senior player Joanne (Crilly) Sloan who got married this month.

U14 Warrenpoint v Liatroim Monday 21st April (Home)

As so many girls had turned out for this match  it was agreed to play 15 a side. We knew Liatroim were a hard team to come up against, but the determined Warrenpoint team were ready for them which showed at half time with no score as yet.  Liatroim were a team that didn’t play by the rules and got away with a lot of fouling.  Even when the Liatroim girl ran off with Michaela’s stick after a fair tackle, the match continued.  Unfortunately, Liatroim got the flukey scores and came away the winners.

St Dallans this year have a fantastic little camogie team.  They took part in the school’s outdoor tournament and although they were very worthy winners of their section, beating, St Clares, Ballyholland and Castlewellan with great scores from Megan McGivern and Amy Freer, they were unlucky to get knocked out by a strong Clonduff team in the quarter finals.

Catriona Fegan had a memorable day at confirmation, when at home the gate opened by itself, But Catriona being on top of the gate at the time, fell off and broke her ankle.

Anyone wishing to purchase a helmet can order one through Aileen Freer.  The county board charges £35 a helmet.  This is a lot cheaper than the shops.  Also a reminder that we are selling sticks. £6 for U12 and U14. £8 for U16 and £10 for senior.  Again these sticks are better quality and cheaper than the shops.

U16 Attical v Warrenpoint Wednesday 23rd April (Away)
This was a very unlucky game for our girls as they played outstandingly well and the fantastic skill of Aoibheann O Hare in goals, showed the girls that they really can play this game and well if only the marking was better.  Welcome to the new girls from shamrocks joining us at U16 this year.

Each year the county board organises a monthly tournament for our U10 girls.  The first one is on 10th May in Ben Dearg.  We have such a large panel of u10’s this year and we want to give them every opportunity we can to experience a match.  We will be going to this tournament and we know we are missing a few girls because of first communion but don’t worry there will be another tournament next month. Please let Liz or Michelle know if you are going.

U12 Warrenpoint V Longstone Saturday 26th April (Home)
It must be the month for injuries as now the U12 goalie, Nadine O Rourke has hurt her foot.  Them gates again….  Warrenpoint were out to get Longstone and they did.  During the whole game the ball came about twice to the back line because the strong midfield of Orla Johnson, Megan McGivern and Amy Freer were not going to let it past.  There were a few very unlucky misses for Sinead and Hanna Lisa at the goalmouth as that ball would just not go into that goal but with sheer determination, Sinead was going to get that ball in and with the help of Rachel Johnson, she did! And not just the once…..  Welcome also to the 3 new girls from Shamrocks who are joining U12 for the rest of the season.        Final Score Warrenpoint 4-1 Longstone 0-0

U16 Warrenpoint V Ballygalget Sunday 27th April (Home)
It seems that most of our actual U16’s seem to have vanished.  This was a very hard fought game and unfortunately Ballygalget were able to convert to scores.  It should be an exciting reverse fixture in a few weeks time.

A new county board ruling has stated that from 11th May 2008,  "NO GIRLS CAN PLAY HURLING OR GAELIC FOOTBALL @ U-14 LEVEL"
Unfortunately this means that none of our camogs can play under 14 hurling like they have done in the past. Girls can still play U12 hurling if requested by their management team.

Senior Warrenpoint V Shamrocks Monday 28th April (Home)
This was the girls first match of the season. After a management decision that Belle O Loughlin was definitely not getting to play, much to her dismay, the girls started in fine form.  Maria Canavan was doing well in goals until she came off injured but fair play to Fiona who unexpectedly took her place and done well.  The girls lack of training showed and Shamrocks took the game.

All senior players are now crippled….. but hopefully have another match soon to relieve their pain.

Underage training continues on Monday and Wednesday evenings at 6pm in St Marks for all age groups.

URGENT Unfortunately, due to a lack of mentors, one of the above trainings may have to cease and possibly one or two of the teams.  So if you know of an adult who is willing to help out, please let her know the urgency of this
