Warrenpoint Man of the Match: Darragh McMeel

Warrenpoint Senior Footballers put up a fighting display against their division 1 opponents Burren in this Senior Football championship match at Pairc an Esler, Newry.  Having had the brighter opening couple of minutes Warrenpoint were not able to put this on the score board and Burren ended up four points up, before the Point registered their first score.  Burren maintained this lead for the rest of the half until just before the stroke of half time Burren hit the back of the net, to give the half time score as Warrenpoint 0-2 Burren 1-6.

Losing by seven at half time, Warrenpoint had a big hill to climb to seek glory but they came out with great pride in the second half, and started to slowly claw back the lead. At one stage they had it back to five points but for a string of wides it would have been a lot closer. Burren were left shaken and nervy but their experience of the higher division unfortunately came through.  Unfortunately for the Blues they could not get any closer than five points with the score finishing at Warrenpoint 0-07 Burren 1-09.

Warrenpoint should be proud of themselves as this was one of the youngest point teams this writer has seen playing in a championship match in a good few years.  Man of the match for Warrenpoint must be their outstanding full back Darragh McMeel who I could safely say won 99% of the ball that came his way.  Ryan Mallon must be noted as a Warrenpoint star for the future with a steady display in the half backs.  In midfield Gaby Smith as ever had a hard working and attacking performance, with Shay Curran especially in the second half causing the tall Burren midfield pairing problems in the air.  Johnny Cowan was strongest in the half forwards with good running and plenty of showing for the ball, showing enthusiasm that will hopefully spread throughout the forwards.  In the full forward Sean McMullan done well for someone who only recently returned to the squad from time spent in Australia, causing the full back line several moments of panic. With a bit of luck this Point team can show this level of football in their remaining league matches to secure their status in Division 2, and to build on it for next year.

Many thanks must go to Hughes Bookmakers for their sponsorship, and also to the Square Peg and P Murphy Construction Ltd for sponsoring the senior footballers t-shirts and bags respectively.
