On Monday evening (18th June), Warrenpoint and Mayobridge U14 Ladies were sitting third and fourth respectively in the league table. Going into this match with little to separate the two guaranteed that a close match was in prospect. The early running was made by the home Blues, but despite the pressure, they could not get the first score on the board, as this went to Mayobridge, with a well worked point.

The Warrenpoint ladies then started to get into their stride and through some excellent team work, got the score board ticking over with regular scores over the bar, as well as two goals. The defensive display put up by the home side was a sight to marvel at, as time and again, Mayobridge attacks came to nothing. The half time break came with Warrenpoint on the right side of a double-digit score differential, having restricted Mayobridge to just five points.

Mayobridge were certainly not going to lie down and let the match drift away from them and after no doubt some encouraging words from their management team, they came out firing on all cylinders in the second half and took the game to Warrenpoint. The teams traded regular scores, with Mayobridge firing in two goals, which was answered in kind by two from the home side. Ultimately the Mayobridge fight back just wasn’t quite enough, as the home side lifted their own game to an even higher standard, with some strong defensive work and excellent forward running play, which created a multitude of scoring opportunities, many of which were taken with calm assurance. Final score 4-16 to 2-7, to the young ladies from Warrenpoint.

Next up for the U14 Ladies is Feile weekend (29th June – 1st July), which promises to be a wonderful weekend of Gaelic football, fun and friendship!
