Under 6s at “Ella Trainor memorial blitz”

Our U6 footballers and coaches made their way to Clonduff this morning for the prestigious “Ella Trainor memorial blitz”. This tournament is very close to the hearts of all in Cumann Pheadair Naofa and this was evident in the large crowd from the club who travelled to support the tournament and the Trainor family.

Our Gaels and Ogs played extremely well in all of their matches followed by refreshments from Clonduff GAA and the Trainor family.

We would like to congratulate all involved in organising such a well-run day.

Under 8 Tournament in Saval

Saturday morning the under 8 Gaels and Ogs travelled to Saval to take part in their annual U8 tournament. And again the Super blues didn’t disappoint.

The Ogs won 4 of their 5 group games and progressed to the final where they came up against a strong Saval team that had beaten them in the group stages. They played fantastic in the final taking some great scores but unfortunately a late goal won the game for Saval (2-2 to 0-6). However, it was great to see this group perform as well as they did all day.

Similarly the Gaels only lost 1 of their 5 group games to progress to the quarter finals. Unfortunately a slow start in the QF had them behind early. A much improved performance 2nd half had them closing the gap quickly but they just ran out of time on their comeback. This group of players again showed some great interplay and are developing fast.

Overall the coaches were very very proud of the performances today. It is a pleasure to coach them. Even more so considering we had no subs today and the kids were at cul camp all week. The effort put in and skill shown were top class. Onwards and upwards and as usual thanks to all the parents for your support.

U12’s Friendly with Burren

On Sunday morning our U12 footballers welcomed near neighbours Burren to Milltown.

Although just a challenge match with nothing at stake, both teams started the game very competitively, with both side’s displaying a real determination to get the upper hand on their opponent.

The first half saw Burren win most of the exchanges in the middle third but struggled to break down a stubborn Warrenpoint defence.  The second half saw the Warrenpoint boys win more of the exchanges in the middle third which enabled them to pose more questions of the Burren defence.  In the end the young blues will take a lot of positives out of the game despite the Burren lads winning 1:07 to 0:04.

U16 Championship

The u16s got their championship campaign off to a very strong start against Tullylish tonight in Moygannon. Due to a number of reasons, the opposition were forced to field a weakened side and from the start the young blues made things very difficult for them. The blues, were very dominant and ruthless in the first half by scoring 3-13 to 0-0 . The second half was pretty much the same however Tullylish did put up a very gutsy and determined second half and managed to score 5 very good points. Final score was 4-18 to 0-5.

The most positive tonight was the introduction of our u14s; all 5 u14s got a great run out and fitted in very well with their older teammates. There were some great performances all over the field, in particular some great goal-taking from David Breen, Ben Lynch (penalty) , Daragh Ruane and Tiarnan McGivern.

Next week, a tougher task will be expected against our neighbours in Rostrevor.

Minor Footballers commence Championship campaign

Our minor footballers faced a fancied Burren side in St.Marys Park on Tuesday night. Burren having beaten the other team in the All County Minor Football Championship qualifying group, Clonduff, the previous week in Hilltown, by 2 points. A large crowd was in attendance for this local Derby and it was the home fans who had the most to cheer about early on as Burren started much the stronger and raced into a 10 point lead in the first ten minutes.

The ‘point boys eventually gathered themselves and started to pull the lead back as half time approached, indeed Burren were probably happier to see half time arrive as despite their initial dominance and the wayward shooting of the seasiders their lead was now back to 7 points.

Right from the start of the second half a much more workman like performance was evident from the ‘point players, indeed within 20 minutes it was back to a 1 point game. The final quarter delivered an action packed spectacle with both teams playing some fantastic determined football and with quality scores coming from both play and the dead ball.

As the game entered the final minutes the home teams lead was now only 2 points and the young blues were pressing for a goal to take the spoils, but as so often happens in football the ball was turned over and Burren went on the attack getting a late late goal to secure a 5 point victory, 2.19 to 3.11. We now face Clonduff at home in the final group game, this is a winner takes all fixture, with the victorious team progressing to the next stage of the championship along with group winners Burren.  The defeated team will exit the Championship.
